With its two Bank Holidays, May is a great time to have a break. And not a bad time to plan a summer vacation if that’s not already done. And in our everso frantic world these leisure activities are even more important since the link between our well-being and holidays is empirically established.
Research by Nottingham University Business School last year examined how families experiencing problems such as low income, unemployment, debt and mental health issues benefit from the chance to enjoy a break. The work established that over three quarters of respondents felt happier and 84% reported a better quality of life.
Further evidence from Victoria University, Australia suggests that holidays may also prolong life. Dr Sebastian Filep, expert in travel and wellbeing suggests “Happiness is good for overall physical and mental health and holidays are a good vehicle for experiencing happiness.”
Amongst other things our leisure is critical for giving the mind and body a rest, recharging the batteries and can provide an opportunity to be more creative. All of which improve our well-being.
So make the most of May and book that holiday!
